Somnath Temple: A Duality of Celebrations During Shivratri

Somnath Temple, revered as one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, comes alive with celebrations not just for Mahashivratri, the grand “Great Night of Shiva,” but also for a lesser-known local observance called Masik Shivratri.

Significance: Celebrated across India, Mahashivratri marks the night of Lord Shiva’s wedding to Parvati. Devotees believe prayers and pujas offered on this day bring immense blessings and spiritual progress.

  • Activities: The temple bustles with activity during Mahashivratri (typically in February or March):
    • Jagran (Night Vigil): Devotees stay awake throughout the night, chanting hymns, offering prayers, and participating in bhajan and kirtan (devotional singing).
    • Elaborate Abhishekams: The Shiva Lingam is adorned with flowers and bilva leaves. Special abhishekams are performed with offerings of milk, panchamrit, and other sacred materials.
    • Maha Arti: A grand aarti ceremony is held at the peak of the night, illuminating the temple and signifying the culmination of the pujas.
